$10,000 Donor Match Program
Great Scenic Railway Journeys (GSRJ), an Emmy award winning public television series dedicated to celebrating the history and heritage of railroads, has announced its participation in a $10,000 donation match program to support the restoration of Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's (WMSR) iconic steam locomotive No. 734. Known for showcasing the beauty of scenic railways and their role in shaping communities, GSRJ has been a long-time advocate for preserving historic railroads. By matching donations dollar-for-dollar, GSRJ aims to inspire rail enthusiasts and supporters to contribute to the restoration efforts, amplifying the impact of each contribution.
The $10,000 match program is a critical boost for WMSR's ongoing work to bring No. 734 back to operational status. The locomotive, a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type built in 1916, has been undergoing an extensive overhaul since its retirement in 2016 for a federally mandated inspection. Once restored, it will return as a centerpiece of WMSR's excursions, offering visitors a nostalgic journey through the Allegheny Mountains. GSRJ's involvement not only provides financial support but also raises awareness about the importance of preserving such historical treasures. This collaboration highlights the shared mission of both organizations to educate and inspire future generations about the golden age of railroading.
